Introduction
The Garden City Model Railroad Club Incorporated is an incorporated society and registered charity, established 40 years ago, and is an integral part of Ferrymead Heritage Park.
Our clubrooms are open to Ferrymead Park visitors every day of the year (except Christmas Day), where visitors can view the various permanent layouts, including a dedicated memorial layout, and museum displays that present the history of model railways through the ages.
There are 3 main layouts available for viewing - The 16.5mm HO/OO layout, the N Scale layout and the Taylor Memorial layout (OO Scale). Two of our layouts are interactive where visitors can view model trains running and operating with the press of a button. This is a real hit with visitors of all ages, whilst the 16.5mm layout is regularly operated by a club member on most Sundays.
One of our primary goals is to foster an interest in the hobby of model railways and to promote the hobby to others. The club facilities provide an opportunity for like-minded people to get together to participate in and enjoy model railways.
Our club members cover all age groups and are from a diverse range of backgrounds, bound together with a common interest in model railways. There is a wide variety of the type of modelling interests pursued by our members and this is reflected in the variety of layouts the club has and these are continually being developed and enhanced.
Members operate a variety of scales, including both N Scale and HO/OO Scales (16.5mm gauge), along with modelling several different prototypical railways, be it New Zealand, USA, UK, European or International originals. This is also reflected in the 16.5mm layout which has separate sections for USA, New Zealand and Australian scenes.
The Club's membership is continually growing and we welcome new members. Membership offers a great opportunity to enjoy the hobby of model railways in the company of others who share the same passion, whether it is operating trains on the club layouts, or learning new skills in the hobby and passing on your own skills to others.
